What is Fitness?

What is fitness?

It’s an idea-intangible-with specifics unique to the individual. The simplest definition of fitness is an action that results in freedom. Fitness is about FREEDOM; the freedom to do what you want to do. It’s not about the action, which is sweat and work, but about the end result, which is a higher quality of life and a greater quantity of that life.

I have recently met some very inspiring individuals who exemplify this idea. One young man of 78 years old goes wakeboarding on a regular basis. One gentleman in his 60s runs 100 miles per month. My husband’s grandmother, a 74 year old lady, goes hiking & snorkeling in Costa Rica. This same woman completed a 15 mile kayak race in the ocean last year. I don’t know about you but I’m not entirely sure I could accomplish this now much less in 35-40 years. You don’t wake up at 65 and decide to do any of these feats; it is the result of living a lifetime of fitness. They are enjoying their retirement years and able to go on any adventure they wish without being held back by “being elderly.” I want to be like these individuals; I want to be able to play and do what I want to do regardless of age.
Fitness is movement, and movement is life.
Are the choices you’re making now with your fitness, nutrition, etc. helping you reach your goals or hindering you? Are you sabotaging yourself? If you don’t make the choice to be your best self now, when will you? Excuses will always rear their ugly head but at some point you just have to do it (you’re welcome Nike). People who are “into fitness” are really just into life. They want to enjoy life to the highest degree possible and the choices they make reflect that. Their passion affects how they spend their time, their food choices, and their mindset. They are willing to put in 1 hour for the benefits it has on the other 23 hours of the day. When your mindset changes, your brain and your body accept that you’re really going to do this and it gets easier. Once you experience success, it’s addictive-making it much easier to choose the grilled chicken and veggies rather than the fried chicken platter because you enjoy the way you look and feel. Strive to be your best self now because you’ll never get back lost time.
FITNESS: It’s really all about the end result and living life to the fullest.

“If you don’t go after what you want, you’ll never have it. If you don’t ask, the answer is always no. If you don’t step forward, you’re always in the same place.” –Nora Roberts

Change

“It takes a deep commitment to change and an even deeper commitment to grow”-Ralph Ellison

Change is a necessary part of life. The most important changes are usually the hardest and fought against the longest. That’s why most people won’t do what it takes to reach their full potential.

To grow, improve, or live, change is necessary. But change is a hard thing to accept and even harder to implement. Sometimes trying to change the course you’ve been on is like trying to turn the Titanic around. There are so many times you want to quit and catch yourself wondering if it’s even worth the effort.

At Foxy’s we understand how hard it is to change—we’ve been there too. Change is really the accumulation of small steps taken and the decisions that are made in this moment. We want to support you and encourage you as you take steps to better yourself.

Most people know what they need to do but fight against making a move in a different direction. Even not making a change is still a decision to stay on your current path. Foxy’s wants to help you no matter where you are on your path to fitness. We believe that everyone can be their best self and achieve goals that seem unreachable. There is no better time than now to change your life; while you might not be ready to take that flying leap of faith, start with small steps in the right direction since even the tortoise reached his goal. Decide to live a life of no regrets.

We invite you to change the path you are on by trying something new. While you might not be ready for that flying leap, you owe it to yourself to take that first step. If you’re not sure what to do to reach your goals, just ask–that’s what we’re here for. And, if you are already making those changes, congratulations and keep at it.

We change lives.

“The important thing is this: to be ready at any moment to sacrifice what you are for what you could become.”- Charles Dickens

Customer Service

What is great service? How do you know when you’ve experienced legendary service? How do you define exceptional service without a specific example?

Customer service is something we all have heard of and expect but it is hard to define. To put it in as simple of terms as possible it is when expectations are exceeded.

At our Valentine’s dinner, my husband and I had an amazing customer experience. The last time we had “eaten” at this restaurant, we had ordered to go (there’s not a lot of eating out with two little kids). When my husband got there to pick it up, they had made a mistake on the order so he had to wait while it was corrected. The manager offered him a glass of wine at the bar and told him that the next time we were in to just ask for him. This was over six months ago. On Valentine’s, we told the server that we didn’t know if it meant anything but that the manager had said to ask for him next time we were in. Within two minutes of probably the busiest night of the year, the manager was at our table. He recognized my husband and remembered which wine he had recommended for him. On our way out, a server from the other side of the restaurant knew our names and both he and the manager thanked us for our business.  It was an amazing experience.

Having your expectations met is nothing special or memorable; it doesn’t make you feel appreciated as a client or make you returning customer. If you go to a restaurant, you expect to have your drink filled before it empties, your order to come out correctly and hot, and your silverware to be clean. If you stay at a hotel, you expect clean sheets, an easy check in and check out process, and hot water and cable. Same thing at the gym…you expect equipment to work, the doors open on time, and courteous & knowledgeable staff.

We believe that you are the most important person at our gym. We want you to experience legendary service every time you come to the club.

Our core beliefs are:

  • Guests first. Every guest & member should feel that coming to the club is like coming home.
  • Show a caring attitude. Take time to show sincere interest. Be involved. Be genuine.
  • Be knowledgeable. Love what you do and share that passion with all who trust you to provide leadership.
  • Bring it all. At the end of the day, can you say this was your best work?
  • Have pride. Show pride in who you are and the company you work for each day.
  • Show respect. Respect and support those you work with, your community, and yourself.
  • Change lives. Every member and guest represents a chance to change a life.

It is my sincere hope that this has been your experience with Foxy’s. Our passion is to make this a place where you get results while feeling like part of the family. We strive to be like Cheers where everyone knows your name. And we want to help you enjoy your fitness journey.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to serve you.

See you soon,

Happy New Year

Goals are a very common thought this time of year…goals set, goals met, goals failed, etc. Setting goals can be bittersweet since it often seems that we do not succeed. What I find interesting is that most people have goals but the goals are vague such as I want to be successful, financially stable, in shape, a better significant other, a better parent, etc. What does this mean? Does making $100 more next year mean that you’re financially stable? Does losing 5 pounds mean you’re in shape? How will you know when you have reached your goals?

Not only that but most of these people do not know where they want to be in 20 years, 10 years, or even in 5 years. If you don’t have a clear picture of where you want to end up or who you want to be, how can you know if the goals you are setting today are in line with where you want to go? The steps you take today may be taking you off the path you should be following.

So many people I see seem to float through life wishing for the “I made it” moment. But without a concrete picture of what that is, they may actually experience it and not even realize what they have. More often they go through the motions of life without a passion, plan, or purpose.

A good friend of mine recommends what he calls the “Starbucks Moment” (they don’t have CC’s where he is). Every three months he goes to the coffee shop with a journal and writes for at least three hours, uninterrupted, about where he will be in 10, 5, 2, and 1 years. He uses present tense and covers all aspects of his life: professional, personal, financial, spiritual, physically, relationally, where he lives, what he has, where he’s going. He works his way backwards from where he wants to be to what he has to do now to get there. It truly is an eye opening exercise and helps with goal setting and focus. You have to be passionate about what you do. It saddens me that it is such a rare thing for people to find what they are truly meant to do in life. They work in jobs they don’t care about and don’t enjoy just watching the clock for the time they can go home. There is someone I know who for the last eight years has only talked about the day they can retire and they don’t have to work in their field anymore; they still have 5 more years to go! That’s miserable! I am truly blessed to have found what I was meant to do. Thank you for allowing me to have a career that I am passionate about, where I feel like I am making a difference in people’s lives, and that is just a lot of fun. My sincere hope is that you are just as blessed to find your purpose.

I can honestly say that if I didn’t have to work, I would still be doing what I’m doing. I think that’s what it boils down to, what would you do if you didn’t have to work? After all the vacations, toys, projects, and just lounging around, what would you do with your life? My husband and I were talking about it; sure there are other things we could be doing than being in the fitness business. But we came to the conclusion that life’s too short and we spend too much time at work to do something that we don’t enjoy and don’t feel like we are having a positive impact on others’ lives.

Here are some quotes I want to share with you and hopefully they inspire you like they inspired me.

  • Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, go do that, because what the world needs is people who have come alive.—John Eldredge
  • Purpose without Passion is a daydream; Passion without Purpose is a nightmare. Individuals could realize far more success from their passion if they take the time to understand, crystallize and clarify their purpose of life. Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/738457
  • Anyone can dabble, but once you’ve made that commitment, your blood has that particular thing in it, and it’s very hard for people to stop you.— Bill Cosby
  • Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.— Ralph Waldo Emerson
  • I don’t care how much power, brilliance or energy you have, if you don’t harness it and focus it on a specific target, and hold it there you’re never going to accomplish as much as your ability warrants. –Zig Ziglar
Again, thank you for allowing us to serve you here at Foxy’s and to help make dreams a reality. My sincere wish is that you too find your purpose and go after that with passion. Set your goals and spend this year making them come true.
Happy 2012!

New Year’s Resolutions

Now that Christmas is over and 2012 is almost here, many people are beginning to make New Year’s Resolutions. I have never been a big fan of Resolutions, because for me they are just too easy to break. According to some studies over half of those who make a New Year’s Resolution will break it within 6 months, but a person is up to 10 times more likely to achieve their goals if some sort of goal is set. I prefer to set more exact goals instead of vague resolutions, so I thought it would be good to give some pretty common and effective guidelines for setting achievable goals using the S.M.A.R.T. Method.

SPECIFIC- Don’t just set a goal to “lose weight,” “get in shape,” or “be healthy.” What does that mean anyway? All of those things mean different things to different people and general statements can be amended too easily to fit your current state of fitness. Decide exactly how many pounds you want to lose, what you want your body fat % to be, or how fast and far you want to run.

MEASURABLE- Make your goals something that can be measured so you can know how much progress you have made or how much further you have to go. An example could be making it to the gym 3 times this week or having to lose 1 pound a week to hit your overall goal of 50 for the year.

ATTAINABLE- If goals are not realistic and attainable a person is much more likely to give up and quit short of reaching the goal. You only set yourself up for failure if you set an unrealistic goal, such as wanting to lose 15 pounds in a week. Be aggressive, but allow yourself to be setup to have success from the beginning.

RELEVANT- Make sure that your goals tie-in to what you are ultimately trying to achieve. If your goal is to run a marathon, your training program probably should not be geared to achieve a 400 lb bench press!

TIME-BOUND- Every good goal needs a time frame. Set a date that you would like to achieve your goal by and work backwards from there, setting smaller goals in shorter periods of time. This helps to give you something more definitive to work towards and will help keep you focused.

Also, for me, if its not written down its not real! Write your goals down and have a plan for exactly how you are going to achieve them. If you feel comfortable sharing them, let someone else know what your goals are and allow them to hold you accountable. So good luck and try setting SMART Goals this year that you are more likely to stick with, instead of vague Resolutions you will most likely quit in a few months, and make 2012 your best year yet.
